How Much Do You Worth ?
One of the major reasons why people quit their jobs is their salary. People end up hating their jobs because of their paychecks, they're discouraged by the little pennies they have to count at the end of the month and this sets their mood to a negative state whenever they think of their jobs.
When you are undervalued you will be unhappy, and your salary is to a certain extent an indication of how your company is valuing you. But how your company is valuing you is not as important as how you are valuing yourself because how you perceive yourself sets the standards you adhere to as a person or an employee.
Many people are quick to say they are underpaid or undervalued but they are not willing to take time to reflect on their actual contribution to see if that contribution really justifies their salary expectations.
I once saw a phrase that read, "You can't expect a million rand reward by giving a thousand rand effort". This is exactly how most individuals are wired mentally, their expectations are not in sync with their efforts. Most people are being paid for just showing up not for their contribution, they get more than they contribute and they wonder why they are stuck on the same paycheck. I agree there are cases where people they are paid less than what they contribute, in that case I believe one should go elsewhere to search for greener pastures because sometimes your best efforts might not be recognized and appreciated where you are, and that's when you have to take your best elsewhere because you can never do more than your best, you can only do your best.
By evaluating and grading yourself puts you in a position to can diagnose a problem causing you to earn a low salary. If the result of your diagnosis points to you then it means you have to work on improving your contribution, you should then beat on your craft, you should sharpen your axe, figure out ways to be more and contribute more, in that way you will unlikely be denied the reward that is equivalent to your contribution.
I see the necessity of us realizing the fact that our qualifications and years of experience don't exactly translate to our actual worth or value we can bring to the table, but they only create an expectation of what we can potentially bring to the table, like having a gym membership, it does not mean you are fit, you still have to go to the gym and train hard to attain your desired level of fitness. So we should not focus on just adding more years against our professions, we should focus on adding more value because that is what will bring transformation and change to our lives and our profession.
In conclusion I believe that we should frequently ask ourselves how much do we worth and if the figure we arrive to does not satisfy us, we then have to work on improving it. Your worth can always go up if you want it to.
